HISTORY
Born to a single mother in tiny McQuady, Kentucky, Magda was raised as an only child within a strict Catholic household. Unfortunately, Magda was a seeker and experimenter from a very early age. This desire to see and try everything under the sun only intensified when, at the age of 13, the Gift passed down through her mother's lineage finally blossomed.
The Stockly women all have the gift of foresight to varying degrees. Nola Stockly (Magda's mother), a highly devout Catholic, called it a curse, the work of the devil, and refused to either discuss or practice her gift. Magda has run the opposite direction, attempting to understand and control her gift, although with mixed results. The foresight most frequently takes the form of dreams, confusing and sometimes terrifying, occasionally featuring people or places she doesn't recognize.
With no one to turn to for help, Magda tried everything she could to learn to control the visions, if not make them go away completely. She started experimenting with drugs while in high school, discovering that sometimes they softened the edges of her dreams. From high school she moved briefly to a local community college, jumping from one course of study to another - religion, philosophy, chemistry, anthropology - in a desperate attempt to find answers about her ability. This search also led Magda to dabble in every form of religion she came across, and when those didn't help she turned to various forms of occultism. Still heavily into drugs, she also often drank herself to sleep when the visions were too much for her to handle. A friend helped her learn to channel the gift into simple tarot readings, and although she still struggles with dreams, the readings usually satisfy some of the driving urge to share the things she sees with others - most especially the subject of her visions, if she can find them.
At the age of 19, Magda became pregnant and dropped out of college to return home. She never told anyone who the father was, simply passing down her own surname, as her mother had before her. Although she wanted to be a good mother, Magda was too immature and too obsessed with her visions to stay put for very long, often leaving the child with Nola to raise.
In addition to her psychic ability, Magda's mother also passed down a love of music and an appreciation of literature. Magda has a appealing singing voice and takes pleasure in singing for others but also simply for herself. She's well-read and especially fond of poetry and fantasy novels. She also has artistic streak, picking up painting and some art history from various friends. Magda rarely stays in one place for very long. She's picked up enough skills to find menial jobs that pay under the table, but she's also not averse to taking up with whatever member of the local counterculture is willing to give her a place to sleep.
PERSONALITY
Magda has a sweet, outgoing, generally positive personality, and completely lacks direction and focus. On the surface she can come off as seeming more than a bit naive, although that's mostly a result of her stubborn refusal to acknowledge the flaws in either the world or the people around her. In reality she's neither naive or an idealist, and not incapable of seeing the bad in people. But clinging to an exaggeratedly optimistic outlook allows her to ignore (and therefore avoid dealing with) the problems in her own life. This also manifests in a fairly flexible moral code: if it doesn't hurt anyone then it isn't "bad", if it does hurt others but she can be convinced that there's a good reason behind it then it's forgivable. One result of this way of seeing things is that she has, and will continue to, take up with people who are not good for her.
She can be impulsive and distractible to the level them some might consider her flighty and unreliable (which unfortunately is sometimes more accurate than she'd like to admit). This can lead to a habit of jumping capriciously from one interest to another, leaving behind unfinished projects and irritated teachers or friends. Some of this is Magda's natural personality, some is a product of her frequent abuse of alcohol and narcotics. When the visions are quiet or she's settled into a situation where she feels comfortable and content, she'll invest her energy in music or art, or even some new course of study. But when she's struggling, she turns to whatever substance is readily available that will put her mind and the world into a lethargic haze.
An extrovert to the extreme, partly because it's easier to deal with the visions and her reactions to them if she isn't alone, but also because she just loves being around people, Magda will sometimes take extraordinary measures to avoid spending time by herself. She's also lowkey a flirt, in that she tends to apply an undercurrent of flirtation to her interactions with most people. The catch is that she mostly doesn't mean it, the flirtation is her way of covering for a constant sense of anxiety about what people might think of her. If they see her as just a pretty tease, they might be less likely to notice when she's being a little bit 'weird', or pick up on what a rat's nest her life is. In the event that the person she's flirting with takes it seriously and rebuffs her, she'll take it in stride. If, on the other hand, the flirtation is reciprocated, well...a dalliance can be a good way to make friends, or find a place to crash for a few days.
